Introduction

Polyols and Amine Polyols

These intermediates are broad treating demulsifier bases used for water drop speed, wetting properties and good water quality. They generally do not perform well as single component demulsifiers. Can cause rapid blackening of cream-colored emulsions and quick brightening of water-hazed emulsions because they can quickly partition through the oil phase to water droplets. They work by counteracting the stabilizing effect of naturally present emulsifying agents.

Polyols and amine polyols are typically blended with high molecular weight complexed polyols and resins in aromatic solvents resulting in very effective demulsifiers for medium-heavy oils.

Oxyalkylated Phenolic Resins

Phenolic resin oxyalkylates are highly effective emulsion breakers.  Phenolic resin oxyalkylates are the most versatile of the intermediates, meaning they perform many functions very well over a broad range of emulsions.  Can be considered the “workhorse” of the demulsifier intermediates and are the are the most commonly used intermediate.  They work by counteracting the stabilizing effect of naturally present emulsifying agents.

Oxyalkylated phenolic resins are typically diluted in aromatic solvents and blended with other type of intermediates (especially polishers) to give synergistic formulas with higher efficiency.

High RSN (> 12) oxyalkylated resins: Good dehydration of the oil, good water drop, prone to overtreat in high gravity crudes.

Low RSN (< 12) oxyalkylated resins: Good wetting properties, good water drop, generally more effective dehydration than high RSN resins.

Phenol Amine Aldehyde Resins

 

Phenol Amine Aldehyde Resins are divided into two categories: SA and FA

SA demulsifier is polymerized by tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), bisphenol A, methanol, polyethylene and polyoxypropylene. SA demulsifier applies to heavy oil and aging oil.

FA resin type demulsifier is polymerized by polyamine, phenol, polyethylene and polyoxypropylene. It destabilizes water-in-oil emulsions, and it is used as a component of dewatering and desalting formulations in the oil and related industries. It can be blended with different solvents to make oil/water soluble demulsifiers.
